One thing that struck me whilst reading this manga was just how quick a read it was. I have to say though that overall, I was impressed by Broken Blade. So, I was unsure as to how I would gravitate to this series, which was not adapted into a series, but rather adapted into several anime movies. Done wrong, you get Gundam Wing.īroken Blade on the other hand is the first time I've seen this combo done in a manga. These two stories are very regularly combined. There are many things that make a war story work, attention to detail, complex characters, morally ambiguous themes, and of course, not having bishounen teens pretend to come off as deep by constantly saying 'world peace! World peace!'

The other story I'm critical of are war stories. I of course love anime like Bokurano that completely deconstruct (and reconstruct) this cliché. It's a type of story that can easily degrade into a bishounen filled group of teens that miraculously pilot machines way beyond their years. The first is the Mecha anime genre, particularly the Real Robot sub-genre and such. Over the years I've become quite critical of two kinds of stories. Using this Golem, Rygart helps defend his home and childhood friends, King Hodr and his love interest, Queen Sigyn, whilst being to forced to fight another old friend on Athens side, Zess. When Rygarts home of Krisna is invaded by the Athens Commonwealth, Rygart follows the trade old trope of accidentally falling into the cockpit of an old salvaged Golem which can mysteriously only be powered by Un-sorcerers. It's this power which allows people to pilot the giant mecha in the series, referred to as 'Golems'. The story of Broken Blade revolves around Rygart Arrow, an 'Un-sorcerer', one of the few people in the world who can't use magic, which is essentially the ability to control a substance called 'Quartz'. I'll just go with what Wikipedia says and stick with Broken. Serialised in a not very well known monthly comic called Flex Comix, the series I will be looking at by Yunosuke Yoshinaga is called Broken Blade.or Break Blade, people kinda differ on what it's called.

In this newest addition of Ongoing Manga Impression, I wish to talk about a series not as well-known as the two previous manga series I looked at. Series like Naruto and Bleach have shown us that a series can jump the shark and seriously decline in quality. Note: The following thought are my opinions of the manga SO FAR, and should not be considered my overall thoughts of the series once it's completed.
